Sub-Zero Ice Maker Troubleshooting: Common Problems and Solutions

Is your Sub-Zero ice maker not producing ice? This guide covers the most common ice maker problems, from water supply issues to defective assemblies, and when to replace parts.

Ice Maker Not Producing Ice

If your Sub-Zero ice maker has stopped producing ice entirely, start with the basics. Check that the ice maker is turned on (the switch or arm is in the down position). Verify that the freezer is cold enough, typically 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker will not cycle.

Next, check the water supply. Turn off the water valve behind the unit, disconnect the water line, and briefly turn the valve on to confirm water flows. If no water flows, the problem is upstream, not in the ice maker.

Low Ice Production

Reduced ice production can result from a partially clogged water filter, a kinked water line, or a water inlet valve that is not fully opening. Replace the water filter if it is more than six months old. Inspect the water line for kinks or pinches, especially where it connects to the unit.

Also check the freezer temperature. If it is above 5 degrees Fahrenheit, the ice maker will produce ice slowly. Adjust the temperature setting and wait 24 hours to see if production improves.

Tips

  • •A new ice maker assembly may take 24 to 48 hours to reach full production after installation.
  • •Avoid storing items on top of the ice bin, which can restrict the feeler arm movement.

Ice Maker Leaking Water

Water leaking from the ice maker area usually points to a loose or damaged water line connection, a cracked ice mold, or a faulty water inlet valve. Inspect the water line connections at the back of the unit and at the ice maker. Tighten any loose fittings and replace cracked tubing.

If the ice mold itself is cracked, the entire ice maker assembly needs to be replaced. Check the part number on the assembly and confirm compatibility with your model and serial number before ordering.

Ice Tastes or Smells Bad

Off-tasting ice is typically caused by an old water filter, stagnant water in the line, or food odors transferring from the freezer compartment. Replace the water filter and discard the first few batches of ice after replacement.

If the ice maker has not been used in several weeks, the water in the line can become stagnant. Run a few cycles and discard the ice to flush the system.

When to Replace the Ice Maker Assembly

If the ice maker is not cycling, makes unusual noises, or produces malformed ice cubes, the assembly itself may be defective. Before replacing, confirm that water is reaching the ice maker (check the fill tube for ice blockage) and that the freezer is cold enough.

Sub-Zero ice maker assemblies are model-specific. Check the part number on your current assembly and verify compatibility using your model and serial number. If you need help identifying the correct replacement, use our Check Fit form.
